How to reach Shimla

By air: Shimla Airport, in Jabbarhatti, is in the city itself. The other nearby airports are Chandigarh and New Delhi.

By Train: The world heritage narrow gauge railways connect Shimla to Kalka.

By road: Shimla is approximately 350 km from New Delhi, and 118 km from Chandigarh. Regular buses, both private and state run  from Delhi  Chandigarh.

Best Time to Visit Shimla

Indian Institute of Advanced Study

Type of place: Historic, educational and inspirational

The Indian Institute of Advanced Study is housed in the famous Viceregal Lodge situated on top of the Observatory Hill. Viceregal Lodge is also called Rashtrapati Niwas. The building was constructed between 1880 and 1888 during Built by the British, IIAS is primarily the summer retreat of Indian President. Dr Radhakrishnan as an institute to promotes advances studies in humanities and arts in India. It was passed on to the nation by the then president –The building is a classical architectural design with proficient fire proofing system .

Visiting hours: 8:00 am to 06:00 pm


Naldehra is one of the best places in Shimla. Naldehra is a beauty full place at 2044 m altitude above sea level  25 km from Shimla on Shimla- Tattapani road. Naldehra houses the oldest and the highest  golf course in India. It is a famous picnic spot and one can have leisure pine lined forest walks and horse rides. Dense deodar trees and stunning greenery create magic in the atmosphere. It is so serene and calm that you would hear the sounds of the winds. You can go on horseback to cover the forest area. One of the advantages of horse riding is that you get to go a bit deep inside the forests.

 Jakhoo Hill

The Jakhoo temple in Shimla is an ancient temple visited by several Hindu devotees all year round.Jakhu Temple is dedicated to Lord Hanuman.There are many monkeys around Jakhu Temple.Jakhu Temple is situated on the top of Jakhu hill, at an altitude of 2455 meters above sea level.Jakhu Temple is easily accessible from Shimla city. The temple is a 45 minute walk from Shimla Ridge. You can also take a pony to visit Jakhu Temple. Lord Hanuman relaxed on this very spot when he was transporting 'Sanjeevani' the medicinal herb from the Himalayas to Lord Lakshman. The herb saved Lord Lakshman's life.Jakhoo Hill is a famous tourist attraction that is visited by nature lovers and pilgrims as well. It is home to the ancient Jakhoo Temple, which has a large statue of Hanuman, its chief deity. Located at an altitude of 8500 feet above sea level, the 108 feet tall statue has sensors to drive away the birds.

The Shimla State Museum

The Shimla State Museum is situated at the top of Mount Pleasant.State Museum houses a huge collection of magnificent paintings, sculptures, coins, handicrafts, photos, etc of not only the state of Himachal Pradesh but outside too. The state museum is a major attraction of the Mall area of Shimla built in the style of colonial edifice with sprawling lawns all around. This museum was inaugurated in 1974.It was constructed to preserve the cultural richness of the state and to record its rich past. The colonial style building amidst marvelous lawns in itself is an inspiring sight. It gives you an in depth view of the city’s glorious past. It has a stunning collection of various objects relating to art, cultural anthropology and archaeology.


Shimla is abundant with places known for their natural beauty and one such lovely green holiday spot is Annadale. Located in the western part of Shimla.Located 4 kilometers from downtown, in the open grounds, and near to the ridge, Annandale is a major tourist attraction nearby Shimla. Kufri is located 17 kms away from Shimla. Narkanda is located 64 kilometer away from Shimla. The place has pine forests. A hill road, with superb views, takes travelers to Shimla from here. The major attraction of the place is that it has a choice of ski-slopes, ranging from a beginners run and a slalom slope to sharper descents, for the experienced.The Hatu Peak is one of the highest peaks in Narkanda and offers a panoramic view of the beautiful valley below. This peak is 7 kms away from Narkanda and can be reached by trekking the mountain slopes. Narkanda has a very famous skiing resort in Himachal Pradesh.
